Wisdom Teeth Extraction

These teeth are the last to develop in the mouth and usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25 years. They appear at a time known as the 'age of wisdom', although it is not uncommon to have problems after this age range.

When wisdom teeth cannot fully enter the mouth, mainly due to lack of room, they are termed impacted. Most people have at least one impacted tooth.

In some cases, potential consequences of leaving impacted teeth in the mouth can be serious. It is therefore important to have regular checkups to ensure potential problems are identified early on.

Possible problems with impacted wisdom teeth include:

  • Damage to neighbouring teeth
  • May itself become infected – very prone to cavities that cannot be restored
  • Gum disease is possible, the area is usually difficult to clean hence attracts bacteria - If bacteria enter the bloodstream it may lead to potential infections and illnesses that affect heart, kidneys and other organs
  • Once gum disease is established this may progress to involve other teeth
  • In some cases a Cyst forms around the untreated wisdom tooth and this may hollow out the jaw and affect the surrounding structures including nerves
  • Even pain free, problem free impacted wisdoms are still prone to disease
Wisdom teeth should be removed or a Coronectomy must be performed if any of the above occurs.

It is possible to leave the wisdom teeth in the mouth; this is usually in cases where the tooth is:

  • Completely erupted
  • Painless
  • Cavity free
  • Disease free
  • In a hygienic environment

To maintain your wisdom teeth:

It is suggested you have regular professional cleaning, annual checkups and periodic radiographs to check for changes.
