Fissure Sealants

Deep pits and grooves can be found on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Such pits and grooves are termed ‘fissures’ and are usually so narrow that toothbrush bristles and streams of water are not able to clean them effectively. These form a favorable environment for bacteria to flourish, often resulting in tooth decay.

Fissure sealants are a dental treatment provided to help prevent tooth decay. It is a plastic like coat that is applied to the grooves of the biting surface of the back teeth. It smooths out the surface which protects the tooth from decay as it stops food and bacteria from getting in the tiny grooves.

They usually last for many years but you must have regular check-ups with the dentist to make sure the seal is still in place. They may wear over time, so the dentist may replace or add a sealant to prevent any decay.

Following the sealant appointment, you may begin to eat straight away. The sealants must be maintained and regularly checked up on to check for any leakage, chipping and wear.
